Car Window Repair & Replacement

Jiffy Auto Glass replaces broken car, truck, and SUV windows — front and rear door windows, quarter glass, vent glass, and rear windshields (back glass) — at your home, workplace, or our Wheat Ridge Auto Shop, with free mobile service across the Colorado Front Range and Phoenix Metro. Side and rear windows are tempered glass, so once they break they’re replaced, not repaired. Certified technicians install OEM-grade glass matched to your vehicle, vacuum up the broken glass, and coordinate your insurance claim when applicable, and every installation is backed by a Limited Lifetime Workmanship Warranty.

If your window is intact but won’t go up or down, that’s a power window motor or regulator repair — we do that too.

Free mobile service in confirmed service areas, or in-shop in Wheat Ridge. A same day appointment or next-day availability is often possible when the glass is available. Open seven days a week.

What Is Car Window Replacement?

Car Window Replacement at a Glance

  • What it is: Removing a broken door, quarter, vent, or rear window and installing new OEM-grade tempered glass, seated in the regulator or bonded in place, then tested and cleaned up. Part of Jiffy Auto Glass’s auto glass repair and auto glass replacement services.
  • When you need it: Any cracked, shattered, or missing side or rear window. Tempered glass can’t be repaired; windshield repair for a chip or small crack often is possible — see windshield chip repair.
  • What it costs: Priced from your VIN and the window’s position. Main factors: which window, your vehicle, tint or privacy glass, defroster or antenna lines in rear glass, and insurance vs. cash.
  • How long it takes: Most door windows are done in a single mobile visit; bonded rear glass takes longer and needs adhesive drive-away time.
  • Insurance: Break-ins, vandalism, hail, and road-debris damage are usually comprehensive claims. We coordinate the claim when applicable; coverage and deductible depend on your policy.
  • Where: Free mobile service across the Colorado Front Range and Phoenix Metro, or in-shop at the Wheat Ridge Auto Shop, seven days a week.
  • Warranty: Lifetime warranty on workmanship — our Limited Lifetime Workmanship Warranty covers the installation.

Car window replacement is the removal of a damaged door, quarter, vent, or rear window and the installation of new glass made to your vehicle’s specification. Unlike a windshield, which is laminated and can sometimes be repaired, side and rear windows on most vehicles are tempered: heat-treated to shatter into small, blunt pieces on impact. That’s a safety feature in a crash and the reason a broken side window is always a replacement — there is no resin repair for tempered glass. It’s also why car window replacement rarely involves ADAS calibration: the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems cameras and sensors that need safety system recalibration after a windshield replacement aren’t mounted in side or rear glass. (If you need ADAS calibration and windshield sensor alignment support, that’s handled with a windshield replacement.)

Side window replacement and rear window replacement are the two most common jobs. Jiffy Auto Glass replaces car windows on cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs, including tinted and privacy glass, rear windows with defroster grids and antenna elements, and the laminated side glass some newer vehicles use for sound insulation and break-in resistance. The technician removes the door panel or trim, vacuums glass from the door cavity and cabin, fits the new Original Equipment Manufacturer-grade window to the regulator or bonding channel, and tests operation before handing the vehicle back.

Spanish-speaking technicians are available subject to scheduling, and flexible financing options are available for qualifying services. Ask about both when you request your free instant auto glass quote.

Why Replace a Broken Car Window Right Away?

A broken car window should be replaced promptly because it’s a security problem first: the vehicle can’t be locked, anything inside is visible and reachable, and a plastic-and-tape cover tells everyone the car is open. It’s also a weather problem — rain, snow, and dust get into door electronics, seats, and carpet — and a safety one, because loose tempered glass keeps shedding fragments into the door cavity and onto seats until it’s vacuumed out.

Broken rear glass adds visibility and structure issues: you lose the rear view and the defroster, and on hatchbacks and SUVs the rear window is part of the liftgate’s rigidity.

Can you drive with a broken side window? Legally, in most places, yes for a short trip, but it isn’t a good idea: wind pulls more glass loose, weather gets in, and the car can’t be secured. The practical point is that a same-day or next-day car window replacement closes the car, clears the glass, and restores the defroster, tint, and locks, usually in a single mobile visit.

Which Car Window Service Do You Need?

“Car window repair” covers three different problems with three different fixes. The glass tells you which one you have; the columns below sort it out, and a technician confirms before any work begins.

Glass is broken — replacement

  • Side, door, or quarter window shattered or missing
  • Rear window or back glass cracked or broken
  • Glass cracked but still in the frame (tempered glass will finish breaking)
  • Deep scratches or vandalism damage across the glass
  • Window broken in a break-in, storm, hail, or collision

Glass is fine — a different service

  • Window won't go up or down, is off track, or drops into the door → power window motor or regulator repair
  • Rock chip or small crack in the windshield → windshield chip repair
  • Crack across the windshield or other windshield damage → windshield replacement
  • Bubbling, peeling, or scratched tint → window tinting

Car Window Replacement by Window Type

Every window on a vehicle is a different part, and several carry electronics. Jiffy Auto Glass identifies the exact glass for your year, make, model, and trim, including tint level, defroster and antenna elements, and laminated or acoustic options, before the appointment.

Front door window replacement

What it is: The most common car window replacement, and usually the quickest. The technician removes the door panel, clears the door cavity of glass, fits the new side door glass into the regulator clamps, and tests travel, auto-up, and any anti-pinch function before reassembly. Available with factory tint on most vehicles.

Rear door window replacement

What it is: Rear door windows often carry fixed quarter sections and privacy tint. We match the tint shade to the factory glass so the replacement isn't visibly different from the other side, and reset any rear window lock settings after installation. Same single-visit job as a front door window on most vehicles.

Quarter glass and vent glass replacement

What it is: The small fixed panes on the rear pillars, behind rear doors, or in front of the mirrors. These are bonded rather than mounted in a regulator, so they're removed and set with adhesive; they're small, but the trim around them can make them the slowest side window to replace.

Rear windshield and back glass replacement

What it is: The rear windshield — also called back glass or back windshield glass — carries the defroster grid and, on many vehicles, the radio or GPS antenna and a high-mount brake light. We reconnect and test each element after installation and confirm defroster function before handing the vehicle back. Hatch and liftgate glass is bonded and needs adhesive drive-away time like a windshield.

Laminated and acoustic side glass

What it is: A growing number of newer vehicles use laminated glass in the front doors for cabin quiet and theft resistance. It looks like a windshield when broken — it cracks rather than shatters — and costs more to replace. We confirm the correct type from your VIN before quoting, so there are no surprises on the day.

Trucks, vans, SUVs, and commercial vehicles

What it is: Sliding rear windows on pickups, high-roof van glass, and fleet vehicles with frequent break-ins. Our commercial fleet service coordinates scheduling, on-site mobile replacement where conditions allow, and consolidated billing for multi-vehicle operations, so a broken window doesn't take a vehicle out of service for long.

How Much Does Car Window Replacement Cost?

Car window replacement cost depends on which window it is, what’s built into it, and the vehicle. A front door window on a common sedan sits at the low end; a rear windshield with defroster and antenna on a newer SUV, or a laminated side window, sits at the high end. Jiffy Auto Glass gives a VIN-based quote for the specific window, so the price reflects the actual part and labor, with no surprise adjustments on the day.

Cost by window type, lowest to highest:

WindowTypical cost positionWhy
Front or rear door windowLowestCommon part, mounted in the regulator, quickest labor
Vent glassLow to midSmall bonded pane; trim removal adds time
Quarter glassMidBonded, often awkward to reach; more variants by body style
Rear windshield / back glassMid to highDefroster grid, antenna, and brake-light connections; bonded with cure time
Laminated side glassHighest of the side windowsTwo-layer glass used on newer and luxury vehicles

What determines your car window replacement cost:

  • Which window. Front door, rear door, quarter, vent, or rear glass — each is a different part with different labor.
  • Vehicle year, make, model, and trim. The same model can use different glass by trim and body style.
  • What’s in the glass. Factory tint or privacy glass, defroster grid, antenna or brake-light connections, and laminated or acoustic construction all affect the part.
  • Regulator or motor damage. If the break-in or impact also damaged the window regulator or motor, that’s a separate power window motor repair we can often do in the same visit.
  • Mobile or in-shop. Free mobile service is available within confirmed coverage areas; bonded rear glass and some liftgate windows are easier to do at the Wheat Ridge Auto Shop.
  • Insurance or cash. Break-ins, vandalism, hail, and road-debris damage are typically comprehensive insurance claims, subject to your deductible; collision coverage applies only in an accident claim, and liability-only insurance does not cover glass. Cash customers get affordable prices with a complete, itemized quote.

Is it worth using insurance? If your comprehensive deductible is close to or higher than the replacement cost, paying cash is often simpler. If the window is expensive — rear glass with a defroster, laminated side glass — or other damage came with it, a claim usually makes sense. Comprehensive glass claims are generally treated differently from at-fault accident claims, but how a claim affects your premium depends on your insurer, so ask them. Either way, call us first: we’ll quote both paths so you can decide. More on our insurance page.

How Does Car Window Replacement Work?

Car window replacement follows six steps: quote, protecting the car in the meantime, choosing mobile or in-shop, removal and cleanup, installation and testing, and reassembly. A standard door window is quick service — typically 1-2 hour service done in a single visit; bonded rear glass takes longer and needs adhesive drive-away time before the hatch is slammed or the car is washed.

Get a complete quote

Call, text, or request a free auto glass quote online with your year, make, model, VIN if available, which window is broken, and a photo. We identify the exact glass, confirm tint and any defroster or antenna elements, check stock, and coordinate your insurance claim at this step when applicable. If you plan to use insurance, call us before your insurer if you like — we’ll tell you what the claim will and won’t cover before you file.

Protect the car until we arrive

Take photos for your insurer, then put on gloves and brush or vacuum loose glass off the seat. Cover the opening from the inside with a heavy plastic bag or collision wrap and painter’s tape (wipe the frame first so the tape sticks), and avoid slamming doors, which shakes more glass loose. Don’t try to force a damaged window up or down — it can jam the regulator. Remove valuables from the car.

Choose mobile or in-shop

Door and quarter windows are well suited to mobile service at home or work within confirmed coverage areas. Bonded rear glass and liftgate windows need adhesive cure time and are often easier at the Wheat Ridge Auto Shop. We’ll tell you which before booking.

Removal and cleanup

The technician removes the door panel or trim, takes out the remaining glass, and vacuums the door cavity, seat, and carpet so fragments don’t rattle or resurface later.

Installation and testing

The new OEM-grade window is fitted to the regulator (or bonded in the channel for fixed glass) using factory-approved installation methods, then run through full travel, auto-up, and anti-pinch checks. Rear glass gets the defroster and antenna reconnected and tested.

Reassembly and handoff

Panel, trim, and weather seals go back on, the technician confirms the window seats and locks correctly, and you get any care instructions — for bonded glass, a short cure period before washing or slamming the hatch.

Car Window Repair & Replacement FAQs

Can a broken car window be repaired instead of replaced?

No. Side and rear car windows are tempered glass, which shatters into small pieces rather than cracking, and there is no resin repair for it. A cracked or shattered side or rear window is replaced. Windshields are different: they’re laminated, and a qualifying rock chip or small crack can often be repaired.

How much does car window replacement cost?

It depends on which window (front door, rear door, quarter, vent, or rear glass), your vehicle’s year, make, model, and trim, and what’s built into the glass — tint, defroster, antenna, or laminated construction. Door windows are the least expensive; rear glass with a defroster and laminated side glass cost the most. Jiffy Auto Glass quotes from your VIN and the window position so the estimate reflects the exact part and labor. Send a photo and your vehicle details for a complete quote.

Does insurance cover a broken car window?

Usually, if you carry comprehensive coverage: break-ins, vandalism, hail, wind, and road-debris damage are typically comprehensive claims, subject to your deductible. Collision coverage applies only when the window broke in an accident claim, and liability-only policies don’t cover glass. Jiffy Auto Glass coordinates the claim, paperwork, and billing with your insurer when applicable; coverage and any out-of-pocket amount depend on your policy.

Should I call the glass shop or my insurance company first?

Either works, but calling us first is usually faster: we identify the glass, quote both the insurance and cash price, and coordinate the claim with your insurer when applicable, so you’re not filing a claim before you know whether it’s worth it.

Can you replace my car window the same day?

Often, yes. Same-day or next-day replacement is available when the glass is in stock and technician schedules, weather, and safe working conditions allow, seven days a week. Common door windows are frequently in stock; rear glass with defrosters and laminated side glass may need to be ordered. Text a photo and we’ll confirm.

How long does car window replacement take?

A standard door window is typically a one-to-two-hour job: remove the door panel, vacuum out the glass, fit and test the new window, and reassemble. Rear windshields and other bonded glass take longer and need adhesive drive-away time before the hatch is slammed or the car is washed. Your technician will give you the timing for your vehicle when you book.

Can you replace a car window at my home or workplace?

Yes. Free mobile car window replacement is available at homes, workplaces, and other safe locations within confirmed coverage areas, subject to weather, space, scheduling, and safe working conditions. Bonded rear glass and liftgate windows are sometimes easier at the Wheat Ridge Auto Shop; we’ll recommend the right setting when we quote.

What should I do right after a car window is broken?

Take photos for your insurer and, if it was a break-in, file a police report. Put on gloves, vacuum or brush loose glass off the seat, cover the opening from the inside with a plastic bag or collision wrap and painter’s tape, and avoid slamming the doors. Don’t force a damaged window up or down — it can jam the regulator. Then send us the photos and your vehicle details for a quote.

Can I drive with a broken side window?

For a short trip, generally yes, but it isn’t recommended: wind and vibration pull more glass loose, weather gets into the door and cabin, and the car can’t be secured. Cover the opening, keep speeds down, and have it replaced as soon as the glass is available.

Can I fix a broken car window myself?

You can cover it and clean up the glass yourself, but replacing the window means removing the door panel, clearing the regulator channel of glass, seating the new pane correctly, and testing the motor and anti-pinch function — and rear glass has to be bonded and cured. Most people are better served by a professional replacement with a workmanship warranty.

Will the new window match my tint?

We match factory tint and privacy glass to your vehicle’s original specification, so the replacement matches the other windows. Aftermarket film that was applied over the old glass is not part of the replacement; we can point you to auto window tinting if you’d like film reapplied.

Do you replace rear windshields and back glass with defrosters?

Yes. Rear windshield replacement includes reconnecting and testing the defroster grid and any antenna or high-mount brake-light connections. Hatch and liftgate glass is bonded and needs a short adhesive cure period before washing or slamming the hatch.

My window won't go up or down but the glass isn't broken. Is that the same service?

No, that’s a power window problem — usually the regulator, motor, or switch — and it’s a separate repair. See our power window repair page, or text us a description and we’ll route it correctly. If the window dropped into the door because the regulator failed, we can often replace both in one visit.
